Medical Centres
Local Publlic Helath Organisation
The six medical practices of Hurunui and Kaikoura have a long history of working cooperatively together and so the Hurunui Kaikoura PHO has been formed around them. This rural PHO is entirely focussed on resolving the unique issues and problems associated with delivering essential health care services to the communities of Hurunui and Kaikoura.
The Hurunui Kaikoura PHO was established in January 2004 as a Registered Charitable Trust and now manages primary health care services in the Hurunui and Kaikoura districts for almost 12,500 people.
Medical centres
The Hurunui District is serviced by five Medical-Centres.
Three of these, at Cheviot, Rotherham and Waikari are owned by the Council, as well as the medical practitioners' residences at Cheviot, Rotherham and Hanmer Springs. Council has a practice of providing up to $150,000 for the provision of medical buildings funded from the district rate with the balance funded from the ward(s) for the community served.

Amberley is a rural practice located some 50km from Christchurch but covers approximately 1,610 square kilometres when on call. The Amberley Medical Centre aims to deliver high quality comprehensive integrated primary health care to the growing practice population. The Centre offers antenatal and postnatal consultations and are assisted by a visiting independent midwife. The Amberley Medical Centre is a reasonably new purpose built building which includes an independent physiotherapist and hydrotherapist (the building has an excellent hydrotherapy pool). The practice is fully computerised and the registrar has their own private consulting room. There is a fully furnished private flat for the registrar to use when they are on call at night. The Centre is within walking distance of excellent restaurants, cafes, and a short drive to a covered swimming pool (summer time), squash court, golf course, and the beach. Doctors Rex Yule and Janet Robertson consider themselves part of the team of primary caregivers practicing from the Amberley Medical Centre. The rest of the team includes Practice Nurses, Rural Comprehensive Community Nurse and visiting Ophthalmologist, Rural Mental Health Team, and Clinical Psychologists.
