- Amberley (with three councillors)
- Amuri - Hurunui(with three councillors)
- Cheviot (with one councillor)
- Glenmark (with one councillor)
- Hanmer Springs (with one councillor)
In total the Hurunui District Council has nine councillors elected from the five wards and a Mayor who is elected from the district as a whole.

The Hurunui District Council does not currently have separate Mäori wards. The Council may resolve to create separate Mäori wards or conduct a poll on the matter, or the community may demand a poll - a petition signed by 5 per cent of electors within the district can initiate the demand for a poll.

Community Boards
The Hurunui District Council has one community board:
The Hanmer Springs Community Board
Currently, the Hanmer Springs Community Board consists of five community representatives, elected triennially by electors in the community, and the Hanmer Springs Ward Councillor.
The board elects its own chairman at the first meeting after the triennial election.
Community Boards are constituted under section 49 of the Local Government Act to:
- Represent and act as an advocate for the interests of their community.
- Consider and report on matters or issues of interest or referred by the
council.
- Maintain an overview of services provided by the council in the community and to make an annual submission on expenditure.
- Communicate with their local community organisations and special interest groups.
Representation Review
The Local Electoral Act 2001 requires all local authorities to review their representation arrangements at least once every six years. The process is called the Representation Review.
