Long Term Recycling Contract Signed

The Hurunui District Council has now resolved its prior concerns and has signed off on a long term contract with Hurunui Recycling for recycling services.

This agreement cements the Council’s collaborative direction, which took into account the overall issues of cost, robust service and economic climate, of using a combined model with Becon Canterbury Ltd for the provision of its waste and recycling services. The Council accepted the premium cost of this model in order to retain the community involvement of Hurunui Recycling in what Mayor Jackson describes as “a best practice model of advanced recycling and diversion from landfill”.

“Council have worked to ensure that the final contract is commercially astute, ensures financial accountability to both Council and the ratepayer, clearly defines responsibilities and obligations, requires a high standard of management and a positive partnership working relationship, and confirms the required performance indicators” said Mayor Jackson.

“I am pleased that we have been able to resolve the business collection issue and the signing of this contract means we can move forward together in a proactive manner to achieve our shared goal of cost effectively increasing the rate and volume of waste being diverted from landfill”
