Elections 2007

Every three years. each local authority in New Zealand is required to hold its triennial election of members. The elections are conducted under the provisions of the Local Electoral Act 2001, the Local Electoral Regulations 2001 and the Local Government Act 2002, and will be held this year on Saturday 13 October 2007.

The following elections will be held under the First Past the Post electoral system by postal vote:

• Election of THREE members for the Amberley Ward
• Election of THREE members for the Amuri-Hurunui Ward
• Election of ONE member for the Cheviot Ward
• Election of FIVE members for the Hanmer Springs Community Board

There will be no election for the Mayor, Glenmark Ward and Hanmer Springs Ward as the candidates for these positions were unopposed. Therefore, the following have been confirmed from 13 October 2007:

Voting documents

Voting documents will be sent to all eligible electors by post from Friday 21 September 2007.

The voting period is for three weeks from Friday 21 September to noon on Saturday 13 October 2007. Electors should return their completed voting papers back to the electoral officer using the reply paid envelope which will be enclosed with the voting documents.

As progressive counting of voting documents will again be undertaken for this election, electors are urged to complete and post their voting documents as early as possible.

Early Processing of Returned Voting Documents and Order of Candidates’ Names

The Hurunui District Council has resolved pursuant to section 79 of the Local Electoral Act 2001 that the completed voting documents will be processed progressively on return, throughout the three week voting period. Council has also resolved that the candidates’ names will be in alphabetic order on the voting documents.
