The Libraries
The Hurunui District Library based in Amberley works as a central focus with 7 other libraries in the District. Council staffed libraries are in Hanmer, Culverden, Cheviot, Hawarden and Volunteer Community Libraries are located at Leithfield, Greta Valley and Waiau.

There are 6 FTE staff operating the libraries - the District Librarian, 4 staff based at the District Library and 5 at the branches. There are also approximately 150 volunteers contributing around 200 hours per week throughout the district.
The District Libraries are closely connected with the schools in the area with 3 being sited in Area Schools and 1 in a primary school.
There are over 47,000 titles in the district, including the school library collections of 2 of the Area Schools.
