The Council provides water to urban communities in the District from eight high pressure schemes and to rural residents from six low pressure schemes.  Rural areas are serviced by six rural water supply schemes consisting of 18 intakes, 63 booster pump stations and 1438 km of pipeline. Eight townships are serviced by an on demand high pressure water system consisting of 10 water intakes and 55 km of pipe. The Ashley Rural Scheme also serves the Sefton, Ashley and North Loburn localities in the Waimakariri District.

The Council on behalf of ratepayers administers the schemes. Council supports consumer involvement and all rural schemes now have management committees publicly elected.
Each scheme is self funded with revenue obtained by annual charge, as well as charges based on consumption on each rateable assessment for high pressure township schemes and by an annual charge per "unit" of supply on rural schemes.

Water meters are progressively being introduced to high pressure schemes in order to conserve water and recover additional costs from consumers using large volumes.

The 25 water schemes in the District are looked after by 11 watermen.

Sewerage

This activity provides for the collection, treatment and disposal of sewage from urban areas of the District in seven separate schemes comprising 14 sewer pump stations and 65 km of pipe works.  (Amberley and Districts, Cheviot, Greta Valley, Motunau Beach, Hanmer Springs, Hawarden and Waikari).
Each scheme is self funding with revenue obtained by uniform annual charge on each rateable assessment having access to the respective scheme.

Land Drainage

Drainage Schemes are administered by the Council on behalf of ratepayers in specific areas.
