Former Tropical Cyclone Gita
12pm Wednesday 21 February 2018
The worst of the wind and rain seem to have passed over the Hurunui now. Please be aware that caution is still needed as the heavy rain has caused slips, swollen streams and rivers, and surface flooding and driving conditions remain hazardous.
Thank you to those that took the precautionary measure to self-evacuate from the coastal areas.
Staff will continue to monitor rainfall and flows.
The latest severe weather warnings are available from MetService.
HDC Emergency Operations Centre is transitioning towards recovery arrangements today. Council staff will be carrying out a district-wide impact assessment of infrastructure and people today and will respond to arising issues accordingly.
Roads & Fords
Crews will continuing monitoring all fords and flood-prone areas throughout the district. The latest updates are listed on our road conditions page.
All State Highway road closures and warnings will be updated in real time during the storm event at http://www.journeys.nzta.govt.nz/traffic/. NZTA is urging drivers to consider delaying travel in affected areas.
Surface flooding and increased turbidity can make water treatment less effective. If any issues are encountered the supply could be shut down for a period of time until providing safe water is manageable again.
Utilities staff are currently inspecting areas across the district for damage and sewer issues.
