Blue Butterfly Day
Today is World Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) Day and the Blue Butterfly was selected as the symbol of awareness for the disorder.
According to a Brazilian folk tale "when many butterflies flap their wings a storm is created - when many beautiful people work together, change will occur." The Blue Butterfly Day date - 9th September - was selected for its correlation to nine months of pregnancy.
Alcohol Wise Hurunui marked the day with a specially made cake which was cut by Hurunui District Council Mayor, Winton Dally this morning. Mayor Dalley was also presented with a Blue Butterfly pin by AWH representatives Lois McGirr and Cr Julie Coster.
The Blue Butterfly Day message is to support women to not drink during pregnancy.
