Cheviot Service Centre & Library Opened To Public
8 November 2013
About 50 people attended the opening of the newly combined Cheviot Service Centre and Library on Tuesday 5 November.
Mayor Winton Dalley officially opened the new service and applauded the work of the local community in creating a new community space. In particular, he paid homage to, “past and current volunteers of the community library and their tireless work over many years to provide a library service to their local community”. He recalled the earlier years when the service was supplied through volunteers and a library bus and later, in the Cheviot Area School which has been home to the library collection alongside the school library.
Local councillor, Vince Daly acknowledged the work of the Cheviot ward committee and those who helped with the project. He encouraged folk, “to fully use this service and support your new local facility”.
After a public consultation process the library shifted from across the road from the Cheviot Area School into the Hurunui District Council service centre. The combined centre will be open 6 days a week, it has 24 hour WIFI access outside of the building, offers free internet and locals can continue to make council payments.
The renovations of the old council building has been a community project from start to finish with a local business man helping to design the dramatic exterior entrance and local designer donating hours of her time on the interior; Chris Hill, a local contractor undertook the building works and many other locals donated their time and skills to bring the project to fruition.
The new team to work at the combined service is Kait Murray, Tania Harmon and Perry Spicer, current Cheviot librarian. District library manager, Justine Lester is confident the Cheviot community will receive a great service from the new team, and said, “They have big footsteps to fill with Ann Duncan no longer fronting the Cheviot service centre. They are all looking forward to helping their local community and passing tourists”.
The hours are: Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm and Saturdays 10am to 2pm.
