Council Adopts Annual Plan
Friday 28 June 2013
The Hurunui District Council has now formally adopted its 2012/13 Annual Plan (1 July 2013 – 30 June 2014).
The Council entered its deliberations today, committed to fiscal responsibility without compromising services. After considering all of the submissions the overall rates increase for the coming year has been set at 5.35% which is very similar to the 5.39% increase budgeted in the Draft Annual Plan. (The actual increase for individual ratepayers will vary across the district depending on location).
The Council considered 271 submissions, the majority of which centred on the controversial proposal to lend up to $6 million to the Hurunui Water Project. The Council considered that the risk was simply too high and that it would not be prudent to lend to a private business and take on a risk that it could not control.
Mayor Winton Dalley says the Council was extremely conscious that any increase could be difficult for some ratepayers, and it has worked hard to keep this as low as possible.
“We need to meet the needs of our growing community but are also very cognisant of balancing this with affordability.”
