Council welcomes youth voice
The Hurunui District now has its first youth council to help advise the more senior body on issues of importance to them.
The 12 member council met for the first time earlier this month to learn about meeting procedures and set the terms of reference for the new group.
It’s taken a year of planning to establish the youth council, which Hurunui Youth Programme Co-ordinator, Samantha Mould, hopes will provide valuable input into council decision making.
“It will provide a forum for young people to have their say and provide an authoritative voice on issues affecting youth in the district.”
Each member had to apply for a seat. Many are already members of the Hurunui Youth Programme and on their own school committees.
Samantha Mould expects one of the biggest difficulties the rural council will face is distance. “Because members come from every corner of the district just getting them together in one place can be a challenge.”
To cater for this the Hurunui Youth Council will meet bi-monthly.
Mayor Winton Dalley and Councillors Judith McKendry and Gary Cooper will also sit on the youth council.
