National recognition for Hurunui Youth Programme
The Hurunui District Council has won the highly commended award in the youth leadership category at the biennial Youth in Local Government Awards.
The awards showcase great initiatives from youth councils around New Zealand and are presented as part of the three day YOUth in Local Government Leadership Conference supported by the Ministry of Youth Development, Mayors Taskforce for Jobs, Venture Southland, Invercargill City Council and Southland and Gore district councils.
A Hurunui delegation, including youth programme coordinator Samantha Mould, two members of the Hurunui Youth Council, Caroline Hope and Michael Peach and district councillor Gary Cooper, were at the conference to receive the award.
"This is such an honour; it recognises the way that our young people are participating for the betterment of our communities and their own personal development," said Samantha Mould. “We know that we are making a difference here in the Hurunui, but it is so exciting to feel that all of our efforts have been noticed nationally too!”
Youth councils are independent of one another and associated with councils around the country. The Ministry of Youth Development website lists 34 youth councils.
