New Targeted Tourism Rate Model for District
Wednesday 20 February 2013
Hurunui District Council has adopted a new model for funding the district’s tourism/visitor marketing activity which it believes reflects a more equitable cost-benefit result for its contributors.
The new model has been a work in progress since July last year, and has been revised and tweaked several times throughout its development. Public consultation prompted more than 70 submissions and the submitters’ feedback definitely influenced changes to the band criteria, exemption process and the inclusion of an additional band.
During Committee deliberations last Thursday, a further band was added and some minor adjustments were made to the criteria lists before adoption.
“It is not realistic to expect that everyone will be completely happy with the outcome” said Mayor Winton Dalley, “this is one of those issues where unfortunately it would be impossible to accommodate every individual circumstance. The Council have endeavoured to produce a model that is as fair and equitable as is possible to both the funders and beneficiaries of the activity.”
