Nominations called for Council committees

Wednesday 6 November 2013

Hurunui residents are being invited to serve on their local ward/community, water or reserve committees.

"With the local body elections over and the Hurunui District Council reconfirming its committee structure, we’re now looking for keen people to serve on our local council committees,” said Hurunui Mayor Winton Dalley.

“The committees will be calling for nominations at their coming meetings and this represents a great opportunity to become involved and to make a difference to your own community.”

Local ward and community committees – in Amberley, Cheviot, Amuri and Hurunui – are responsible for township maintenance, street lighting, footpaths and other local amenities and community activities.

Water and reserve committees look after the day-to-day running of their local water scheme or reserves which are not managed by the local ward committee. All committees are involved in planning projects and budgets for their areas of responsibility.

Hurunui CEO Hamish Dobbie endorsed the call for local people to allow themselves to be nominated for committee membership for the coming three years. “The Mayor and councilors encourage decision making to be made at a local level wherever possible. They believe this is critical to the success of the district and that local people know what is best for their communities. We are hoping that there will be strong interest to participate in this way.”

The closing date for nominations varies so please contact Maree Hare, Committee Secretary, 03 314 0111 or email: maree.hare@hurunui.govt.nz
