Recycling Service Choice for Amberley
Thursday 04 April 2013
After receiving feedback on the new contract arrangements at the Amberley Transfer station, the Council has agreed that the drop-off area for recycling materials can re-open.
The Managing Director of Hurunui Recycling, Rex McKenzie is pleased that an agreement has been reached which will give people a choice of putting all their unsorted recyclables into a compactor to be carted and sorted in Christchurch, or separating their material into bins for Hurunui Recycling to process, as happened before March 1st.
“We have received a number of complaints from people who have always supported us and found the new hours to be too restrictive, and this will allow those people to again drop materials off from 8.30am, 6 days a week” Mr McKenzie said.
The Council’s Special Projects Manager, Bruce Yates concedes that the new hours being trialled may have caught some people unawares, but the Council has also received a lot of positive feedback on the new arrangements. While there had been a lot of confusion about what could and couldn’t be done on the site in terms of its resource consent, and also the terms of the contract the Council has with North Canterbury Community Resources, “In the end, as landlords we felt that safety in the yard would be greatly improved if public vehicles were restricted to just one area, namely the transfer station. However Hurunui Recycling have put up a pretty strong argument for retaining the drop-off and we are prepared to have the two choices available on the one site until we relocate to Grays Road”.
Mr McKenzie urges the public to obey the 5kph speed restriction when using his drop-off facility. ”People need to be aware that this is a working yard and there are a lot of different machines in operation” he said.
Both the Council and Hurunui Recycling are fully committed to minimising waste going to landfill and hope that by now providing two options for disposing of recyclables, both free, there will be an even better result for the district.
