Councillor Jason Fletcher, who sits on the assessment panel, says the Sport NZ funding is essential for the district as it allows small communities to access vital funds to grow a sporting interest or passion.
“The quality and range of applications was strong and it is pleasing to see such a wide variety of different sports represented.”
“All the initiatives aim to engage, improve or pass on knowledge to members of our community and enrich our district’s sporting landscape. I am personally looking forward to seeing the results this funding will bring the various groups,” says Councillor Fletcher.
The Rural Travel Fund is a partnership between Sport NZ and local councils, with each council taking responsibility for delivering the funding in its area. The fund is designed to subsidise rural travel for junior teams, and help club and school sports teams participate in local competitions.
