Summer Reading Programme a Hit in the Hurunui

With a nation-wide programme for children that rewards reading over the school holidays already established, Hurunui District Libraries wanted adults to be able to join in on the fun.  So they have come up with a new summer reading programme which is already proving to be extremely popular.

The Adult Summer Reading Programme encourages participants to play ‘Book Bingo’ and fill up their bingo card by completing five reading challenges of their choice.  There are 25 challenges featured on each card to choose from, including categories such as ‘Mystery or Thriller’, ‘a title beginning with L’ or reading a ‘childhood favourite’.

After a challenge is completed, readers can bring their bingo cards into one of the district’s libraries and receive a stamp for that challenge.  Once a bingo card is complete with five challenges stamped, readers receive an entry into the draw to win one of five awesome prizes with the first place winner set to receive a Samsung GALAXY Note tablet.

Hurunui District Libraries Manager, Justine Lester, says the district’s libraries have already received a large number of completed bingo cards and the programme is providing a fun holiday activity for everyone to get involved in.

“With so many challenges to complete, Book Bingo is encouraging readers to explore a range of different genres and read a large number of books.  The more bingo cards you complete, the more entries you get so we encourage everyone to stop by their local library, pick up a bingo card and start challenging themselves.”

All completed cards must be received by one of the district’s libraries by 31 January 2018 for readers to receive an entry into the prize draw.  Prizes for the Adult Summer Reading Programme will be drawn on 9 February 2018.
