Track Network Governance Group Strategy Adopted
The Hanmer Springs Track Network Group vision is to promote Hanmer Springs’ incredible range of outdoor experiences - which are available for everyone at every level of challenge / ability. The focus is on the three main types of track users: walking, horse riding and mountain biking.
The vision for the track network has been split into three areas:
- For walking: the track network offers easy to challenging walking and tramping with easy access to New Zealand’s wilderness.
- For horse riding: the track network offers iconic country riding and a chance to extend your skills, relax, play and train with your horse and equine friends.
- For mountain biking: the track network is New Zealand’s best cycling and mountain bikingdestination for people wanting to improve their riding ability.
The stakeholders that make up the Track Network Group includes Hanmer Springs Mountain Bike Club, Hanmer Springs Business Association, Hanmer Springs Heritage Forest Trust, Horse club, Tramping club, Businesses, Hanmer Springs Community Board (Hurunui District Council), Department of Conservation, Ngai Tahu, Rayonier and track expertise.
Over the last two years the Governance Group have been developing a strategy to advance the vision – one that will benefit both locals and visitors. The key benefit of a combined Hanmer Springs Track Network Group Development Strategy is the continued ability for track user groups to work together to build on the substantial efforts of volunteers while optimising the resources available from supporting organisations such as various landowners, the Hurunui District Council and the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa.
The strategy document, along with the work and dedication of the Track Network Group members, will ensure a long term future for the tracks.
That future, well-supported and funded, will lead to tracks of a national standard which offers walkers and riders the ability to challenge themselves, learn new skills or simply enjoy the beautiful surrounding of Hanmer Springs. Additionally, links to the backcountry of the St James and Molesworth Stations will lead to an even more enjoyable experience.
