Tuia-Rangatahi Leadership Programme 2012
The Tuia leadership development programme is a long term, intergenerational approach to developing the leadership capacity of young Maori in communities through-out New Zealand.
At a local level, the Hurunui District Council Mayor, Winton Dalley, will select a Maori youth (rangatahi) from the Hurunui district who he will mentor and foster a one-on-one relationship with, in order to enhance their leadership skills. The rangatahi (young person) will be mentored on a monthly basis, involving both formal and informal meeting occasions that will assist the young person’s development as a local leader. The relationship will also provide both partners with the opportunity to gain a deeper insight into intergenerational issues, cultural values and experiences.
Selected rangatahi are expected to undertake and record a 100 hour community service project in their community. There will also be the opportunity to build networks, obtain support and receive leadership training by attending four leadership development wananga in the North Island over the course of the year.
