Waiau Welfare Centre remains open

Earlier reports of the Waiau Welfare Centre being closed were incorrect; the communal kitchen has been closed.

“Meals are no longer being prepared on site due to the risk of gastroenteritis, which let’s face it, nobody needs on top of everything else that has happened,” says Hurunui Civil Defence Controller, Audrey van der Monde.

“But we would like to reinforce that there will still be food available to those who are unable to cook for themselves.”

Temporary boil notices are in place until further notice.

What to do if you think you have Gastro

Anyone with symptoms of gastro, such as diarrhoea and vomiting should stay at home and call their own general practice.  Remember you can get care around the clock by calling your own general practice number after-hours.

Those in the Hurunui district will pay reduced ‘quake rates’ when they visit their usual general practice for quake-related health matters.
