Hurunui Water Project
Council is giving consideration to the purchase of shares in the Hurunui Water Project. The submissions process for the 2017-18 Annual Plan made it clear that opinions across the district were divided on this issue; some feeling that Council should support growth and industry in the district, others that the money would be better spent elsewhere. Council is currently undertaking a 'due diligence' process prior to making a final decision on the issue. This page will be updated to inform interested parties on progress toward that final decision.

At a meeting on 23 November 2017, Council received a report from the Chief Executive Officer recommending the purchase of Hurunui Water Project shares. The Council resolved as follows:
THAT THE ITEM BE DEFERRED AND THAT THE COUNCIL REQUESTS FURTHER INFORMATION FROM OFFICERS TO FULFIL THE DUE DILIGENCE REQUIREMENTS IDENTIFIED IN THE INITIAL DUE DILIGENCE REQUEST BY COUNCILLORS.

At its meeting on 1 June 2017, Council Resolved to include the sum of $500,000 in the 2017-18 budget for the purchase of shares in the Hurunui Water Project. The resolution was worded as follows:
THAT THE COUNCIL APPROVES MAKING PROVISION FOR $500,000 IN THE ANNUAL PLAN BUDGET FOR THE POTENTIAL PURCHASE OF HURUNUI WATER PROJECT SHARES, WITH ANY PURCHASE BEING SUBJECT TO THE COUNCIL BEING SATISFIED WITH THE ANSWERS IT GETS FROM THE DUE DILIGENCE PROCESS THAT THE BENEFITS OUTWEIGH THE RISKS AND THAT THERE BE ANOTHER ROUND OF CONSULTATION WITH THE COMMUNITY BEFORE MAKING A FINAL DECISION ON THE MATTER.
