Right to Demand a Poll on the Electoral System for 2013 Elections

On 28 July 2011, the Hurunui District Council decided to retain the First Past the Post (FPP) electoral system for the 2013 local government triennial election.  This is the system that the Council has used in past elections for the Council and its (Hanmer Springs) community board.

The public the right to demand a poll on the electoral system used for the elections of the Council and its community board.  The specified number of electors required to demand a poll is not less than 390 electors of the Council (5%).  A valid demand for a poll must be made in writing and signed by the specified number of electors. Each signature must be accompanied by the elector’s full name and the address for which the person is qualified as an elector of the Council.  The Local Electoral Act 2001, sections 27 to 34 sets out the legal requirements.
