Canterbury Maps is a shared services initiative for online mapping initiated by CLAGG (Canterbury Local Authorities GIS Group). CLAGG consists of all the local authorities, including Hurunui District Council and Environment Canterbury. The aim of this initiative is for local authorities to share data with the public through one portal. This means that the public can access environmental and territorial authority information for the whole of Canterbury from one website. The website is also easily accessible from smart phones and other devices using the Canterbury Maps app (available from the Apple and Android play stores).
Why share our data and why use a shared platform?
- This is in line with the government data sharing initiative.
- Canterbury earthquake experiences highlighted the need for improved data sharing among organizations.
- The development/running costs of the GIS viewer are shared among local authorities.
- Data/services are provided in a consistent manner.
