Recycling Electronic Items e-waste
Disposing of old TVs, computers, monitors and other Electronic Waste (e-waste) safely can be difficult. These items can contain toxic substances such as lead & mercury. Rapid changes in our technology have resulted in e-waste becoming the world’s fastest growing form of waste.
When properly handled e-waste can be disposed of without harm to human health or the environment. In fact many components of old or unwanted electronic goods, including reusable metals, are able to be recovered through recycling.
Council sees the benefits to our community and our environment of disposing and recycling e-waste safely and supports the disposal of these items through these transfer stations.
- Cheviot Transfer Station
- Culverden Transfer Station
- Hanmer Springs Transfer Station
- Waiau Transfer Station
Removing and Recycling e-waste also enhances the life and health of landfills by reducing the amount of fill. This ultimately benefits the environment we live in.
All e-waste collected through the transfer stations will be processed in Canterbury by E-Scrap Recycling
- Normal Recycling Charges apply

Illegal Dumping of Refuse in the Hurunui District
The illegal dumping of waste is an offence against the Litter Act 1979. The Council has a number of available enforcement options including issuing an infringement notice (maximum $400 fine) or prosecution through the Courts.
If illegally dumped litter is of such a nature as it could endanger any person (example - any bottle whether broken or not, glass, article containing glass, sharp or jagged material, or any substance of a toxic or poisonous nature), those responsible could be sentenced to a maximum of one month imprisonment and/or a maximum fine of $7,500. In the case of a body corporate, the fine increases to a maximum amount of $30,000.
