Refuse Transfer Station
Hurunui District Council operates the following transfer stations:

Amberley - Carters Road |
Monday to Friday, 9am to 4.30pm and Saturdays, 9am to midday |
| Cheviot - Mina Road | Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays 10am to 1pm |
| Culverden - St Leonard’s Road | Sunday and Wednesday, 2pm to 4pm and Saturday, 9am to 10.30am |
| Hanmer Springs - near the river bridge | Between 1 June and 31 August, opening times are Sunday and Wednesday, 1pm to 4pm. For the remainder of the year, opening times are Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, 1pm to 4pm |
| Waiau - just south of the river bridge | Monday 1pm-3pm, Thursday 10am to midday and Saturday 11am to 12.30 pm. |
Waikari Refuse and Recycling Drop Off
Opening Arrangements and New Booking System:
Through to the end of August 2012, a booking system for using the Waikari Limeworks refuse and recycling drop off is being implemented.
To use the facility, it will be necessary to notify Council in advance. Should no bookings be received, the site will remain closed.
The booking process is as follows:
- Please telephone 03 314 8816 by the required cut-off date and time.
- Provide your name, address and contact number.
- Provide a brief description of the items you intend to bring to the site, (this will enable us to assess whether the recycling trailer is required in addition to the refuse vehicle).
Opening arrangements are as follows:

Transfer Station Recycling
Through the districts transfer stations, it is possible to recycle:
- Glass bottles and jars
- Food and drink cans
- Newspapers
- Magazines
- Cardboard
- Plastic (hard and film)
- Untreated timber
- Gib board
- Polystyrene
- Car batteries
- Green (garden) waste
- Scrap metal and white goods
- Computer towers and keyboards
- Paint and stains
Apart from glass, car tyres, gas bottles, green waste and car batteries, all recycling should be placed together into the dry waste containers. Staff will provide guidance.
Directions regarding the recycling of the above will be provided on site or can be obtained through contacting the Council on 03 314 8816.
Engine oil can be recycled through the Amberley transfer station and empty (triple rinsed) agricultural chemical containers through the Culverden transfer station.
Green Waste Recycling
Green waste is accepted through the district’s transfer stations for composting. Please always ensure the following:
Materials acceptable for composting are:
- Tree and shrub pruning’s up to 100mm thickness and any length
- Leaves
- Any green vegetative material, i.e. perennials, vegetable plants, annuals, etc
Materials NOT acceptable for composting are:
- Grass clippings
- Bamboo
- Flax and flax flower stalks
- Palm fronds and cabbage tree leaves
- Gorse and tussock grasses
- Complete loads of weeds with roots heavily contaminated with soil
- Soil and material from compost heaps
- Stones, plastic, glass and metal objects
- Material with baling twine or string mixed through it
- Oxalis and listed noxious weeds
- Mixed loads of rubbish and garden waste which cannot be sorted
- Animal manure
Is there anything which is not accepted as Waste or Recycling through the Transfer Stations?
Hazardous waste, large bundles of wire, large quantities of hardfill, asbestos, tree stumps and skip loads of waste cannot be accepted through any of Hurunui transfer stations. Please contact the Council regarding how to dispose of these items in a responsible manner.
Please note: Commercial waste operators are not permitted to deposit material at any of the Hurunui District Council transfer stations.
