There are 101,903 square metres of formal footpath, 81 kilometres of kerb and channel, 881 streetlights, 25,871 traffic signs, and 46 kilometres of culvert pipe in the district.
So that, as well as caring for our roads, we are also involved in:
- Routine drainage maintenance to ensure roadside drains stay clear of debris.
- Ensuring the integrity of all bridges and retaining walls, tunnels, stock underpasses, vehicle ferries, cattle stops and fords. This work is called structures maintenance and structure component replacements.
- Environmental maintenance. This is important to maintain safety, aesthetic and environmental standards and involves removing this likes of snow and ice, litter, effluent, and graffiti as well as maintaining rest areas.
- Operational traffic management and renewal which focuses on the operation, maintenance and provision of traffic signals and other traffic management equipment.
- Emergency reinstatement. This is were unscheduled repairs or work is required after a heavy rainfall or flood event, for example, and.
- Network and asset management. This is the general management and control of our network and assets and is important to ensure that the right decision is made at the right time for the right reasons.
Routine drainage maintenance
A good maintenance strategy begins and ends with a good drainage maintenance strategy.
- Cleaning of kerbed water channels, sumps and cesspits in urban areas
- Maintenance and repair of surface water channels and sub-soil drains
- Stream cleaning and debris removal to maintain water courses through culverts/pipes
- Removal of berms impeding drainage
Structures maintenance
This includes maintaining the structural integrity and appearance of all bridges and retaining walls as well as the maintenance of tunnels, stock underpasses, vehicular ferries, cattle stops and bridge waterways (fords) when the bridge is directly affected.
The sort of work this involves is:
- Repairs to handrails associated with structures
- Repairs to guardrails, including wire rope barriers
- Minor repairs to other components
- All cleaning and painting
- Stream clearing and debris removal to maintain water courses under bridges
Environmental maintenance
This work category provides for the routine care and attention of the road corridor to maintain safety, aesthetic and environmental standards.
- Snow clearing and ice control

- Removal of, and protection against, graffiti on road structures
- Maintenance of, and removal of effluent from, stock truck effluent disposal facilities
- Any special treatment of fun-off from the road to maintain water quality

- Non-recoverable costs arising from cleaning the carriageway of damaged vehicles, crash debris and spillages that are not the responsibility of emergency services

Emergency reinstatement
This work category provides for unforeseen significant expenditure that arises from a defined, major, short direction natural event. It allows for the restoration of roads and road structures to a standard no better that that which existed before any damage occurred.
Includes for all damage repairs, but excludes for:
- Minor scour in water channels and other drainage facilities
- Dropouts and/or slips that do not require constriction of a traffic lane, provided that they do not need urgent attention to remove a threat to safety or to the road structure
- Scour, degradation or aggradations threatening roads, bridges or other road-related structures that has accumulated over time

This category provides for the general management and control of the road network and management of road assets.
