Careers
Adele Patchett, Building Officer.
“Hurunui District Council supports growth and learning. During my time with the council, I have completed a building cadetship to become a building officer. This involved studying towards a Diploma in Building Surveying —as well as practical work. The council really encouraged me throughout my journey and I always felt supported by my team members. I can’t think of another organisation where this would have been possible. Obtaining this qualification certainly allowed me to progress my career.
“I also appreciate how working for Hurunui Council gives me a great opportunity to work for the community in which I live.
“The day-to day camaraderie with my colleagues is something I value. Having smaller teams means there are always opportunities for interaction during the work day and you get to know and understand what the other areas of the organisation do. I also appreciate the diversity within the council, with its mix of Hurunui locals and staff living out of the district. Council has an active Social Club and events are always well supported.
“The council supports a work-life balance and flexible working hours means you’re never late for work!”
Liz Atkins, Rapid Number and Vehicle Crossing Officer.
“The ability to work flexible hours and being supported to grow your career is what I really appreciate about working for the Hurunui Council.
“I have been lucky enough to work for the Council for over 17 years. During this time, the Council has always supported and encouraged my career growth. In recent times, after starting a family, I have had the opportunity within Council to change roles and reduce my hours, allowing me to spend more time with family.
“Throughout my journey with the Council, I have enjoyed the camaraderie of friendly colleagues. As a smaller-sized council, there is always plenty of variety in the work we do.”
Pam Stikkelman, Customer Support.
“I really enjoy working at Hurunui District Council as the council is very supportive and encouraging when it comes to professional development.
“I first started working at Council as a casual employee at the Amberley Transfer Station. When the permanent worker handed in her notice, I was offered the job as a part-time position with fixed hours.
“While I was working there, I decided to pursue further study and chose a certificate in Business.
“I’m a hands-on learner, so I jumped at the opportunity when my team leader suggested some work experience in Council’s front office. The Customer Support team leader was very supportive of the idea and, after I had undertaken work experience for a while, I was asked if I would like to come on board as a casual in the Customer Support team. I happily took on this position while still working my part-time hours at the Transfer Station.
“As soon as a permanent part-time job as Customer Support became available, I applied for that and was thrilled to be accepted. I decided to keep my casual hours with the Transfer Station as I loved the variety.
“I also took up an opportunity to be trained as a relief librarian and I enjoy filling in when needed.
“The flexibility that Council offers and the way they have supported my professional development is really appreciated.”
Reynaldo Tabayoyong, Engineering Assistant.
“Working for Hurunui District Council is a great opportunity, especially for a migrant like me. As part of the Programme Management and Amenities Maintenance team, I enjoy working to deliver on our goal of providing the best service to our community. Our team takes pride in what we do, and I find it rewarding to be a part of that.
“If I could say to anybody thinking of starting or furthering their career with Hurunui Council – make the move now.”
Rick Cassels-Brown, Property Officer.
“Hurunui District Council owns 200 plus buildings, and I look after the maintenance of those buildings in an admin role.
“The thing I enjoy most about working for HDC is that I’m in a relatively new team of six and we have a very diverse range of experience and skill. I feel supported at all times in what I’m doing.”
