How the Council works
All the elected members and the Mayor make up the Council. The full Council meets regularly on the last Thursday of each month and occasionally for special purposes. Because there is a large volume of business to conduct, the Council forms various committees to deal with specific issues. Currently the main committees of Council are the Audit and Risk Committee, Operations Committee, Strategy & Policy Committee and Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa Management Committee.
In addition to the Council, Hanmer Springs also elects a Community Board to deal with local issues. The full Council delegates a range of functions to the Hanmer Springs Community Board. The rest of the district is divided into wards and Council delegates some local matters to each ward and community committee who also advise Council on local matters.
The Council also employs a Chief Executive Officer to manage and perform the functions that the Council and legislation require. The Chief Executive's role is one of management while the Council's role is one of governance. The Chief Executive employs such additional staff as necessary to perform all the Council's functions and the senior managers form the Council's Executive Team.
