A Word from the Mayor
Over the past few weeks, the Hurunui District council have been engaging with our coastal communities to listen and work together to understand what are the potential consequences of the changing nature of our coastal environment.
The council like other councils across New Zealand have a variety of responsibilities set out in legislation that requires councils to look 100 years into the future therefore it is critical that we work together to understand the issues and take control and determine a plan that provides certainty and direction for future decisions. It is important that those who live in the coastal environment share their knowledge as this will be valuable in direction setting. Jacob’s consultancy have identified what coastal hazards may or may not be an issue with the scenario of 30, 50 and 100 years Further opportunities will be confirmed during November and it has been agreed that a series of drop in sessions will be hosted or communication may be made on www.hurunui.govt.nz/find/coastal-conversations or contact the team on coastal@hurunui.govt.nz
I would like to acknowledge the work of the Hurunui District Council 3 waters team who have had approved the first Water Safety Plan under the Ministry of Health’s new framework this is the first in New Zealand – which is a significant milestone. The new risk framework evaluates the source, treatment, storage and distribution of water supplies. Each water safety plan identifies what could go wrong and what is in place to mitigate and is required on each of the 19 schemes across the district. This has required a huge about of analysis, understanding and recording – well done to the council staff on this significant achievement.
2020 has seen many of our events cancelled so it with eager anticipation that we look forward to hosting some of iconic events across the district with the upcoming Amberley A & P show, the Hurunui Garden Festival, the Country Christmas Fete and the Hanmer Springs Fete to name only a few. This is a magic opportunity to showcase our district and enjoy all that our district has to offer. I wish them all well for successful events.
The fire risk is high at present and causing havoc and destruction with frequent strong nor west winds and dry conditions – please consider your actions.
