Youth and our future
Saturday 24th October I attended the Neon Nui organised by the Hurunui Youth council for the younger members of our district.
What a great night – good music, plenty of food, excellent dancing and fun had by all. The Youth Council has a strong history of supporting and advocating for the youth voice in our district despite this year being disrupted by the covid-19 lockdown. The 2020 Youth council members should feel proud of their commitment, courage and willingness to organise this event when your lives are full of preparing and planning for examination timetables and whatever may lie ahead in 2021. The organising team lead by Caleb Wilson were well supported by Ward Shearman the Hurunui Youth Development officer, the teamwork ensured that the event went off without a hitch – plenty of good companionship.
The recent employment of Rebecca Pugh - Youth worker for the district is exciting. We are fortunate to have Rebecca’s talent and understanding of youth and youth affairs. Ward and Rebecca will be a great team to ensure that the youth voice is supported and heard and that the district recognises the strengths and abilities of youth and builds on these attributes.
Hurunui Youth Council are currently seeking expressions of interest for membership in 2021, and like any committee some experience balanced with fresh voices will be welcomed with membership well supported by Crs Fiona Harris and Geoff Shier.
The Hurunui Youth Council is the governance membership, with the Hurunui Youth Programme being the activity base for a range of events to engage, support and advocate for the youth of the Hurunui District.
Membership on the Youth Council consists of representatives from the contributing schools in Hurunui inclusive of Rangiora High school, Boarding schools or Tertiary institutions.
If you are interested to understand more, your best option would be to speak with Ward Shearman – Youth Development Officer at the Hurunui District Council.
With the busy examination schedule fast approaching – I wish all students the best of luck for their exams ahead - preparation is key and remember there are many people around you to assist through this stressful period.
