Your voice should be heard:-
It has been gratifying to have reasonable attendance at our recent series of workshops, designed to assist community members to develop a submission to present to the finance and expenditure select committee in regard to the 3 waters reform. It is critical that members of the public ensure that they exercise their democratic right and submit before 22 July 2022. The series of workshops have taken a bi-partisan approach and paid attention on how to use the Government portal to write your submission.
This is the first of a suite of legislation that is proposed in regard to the 3 waters reform and is particularly focused on the proposed 4 entity model, there is expected subsequent legislation which will focus on the delivery of rural water supplies in the next month or two. Our district submission is seeking a pause of the entire process, a position we have held from the start. Councils are in the best position to understand and deliver to the communities that they represent. We must continue to advocate for a more equitable funding and financing model that would support councils to deliver on the desired environmental outcomes. Many good examples have been explored over the years but unfortunately have not found favour in the current model.
On another note: are you aware of North Canterbury Neigbourhood support?? this is a part of a nationwide community lead movement that brings people and neighbourhoods together to create safe, resilient and connected communities. Neighbourhood support work alongside NZ Police and other partners to equip neighbourhoods to improve safety, and be prepared for emergencies.
Once registered at www.ncns.org.nz which is the North Canterbury Neighbourhood support group you will also receive an email alert that will provide warnings for significant weather events, this information is helpful for planning around your farm, your travel and your general safety. Alongside the Rural Lookout app with NZ Police we are well served to support our safety in our district.
