A Word from the Mayor
Once you read this the Amuri show has been hosted with Cheviot and Hawarden to come, I was very impressed with the Amuri show, the team had created an event that showcases the community at its very best with many people enjoying the event. The reform for the Future for Local Government speaks about retaining the local voice, making certain that we look after the grassroots and the importance to keep ourselves anchored with the focus on our place of belonging, the future proposals that look towards large entity models to achieve scope and scale will remove much of this.
Last week I attended the Rural and Provincial forum in Wellington with other Mayors and Chief Executives from across the sector, we were able to listen to elected members from the most effected areas with Cyclone Gabrielle. There was much reflection on the Waiau Earthquake and the lessons learnt particularly around the importance of creating a balance during the immediate response with a much greater emphasis on local people helping with the lead, then during recovery a locally led plan with tools and funding to implement and then to build resilience that develops community spirit and knowing your place of belonging.
The North Canterbury Wine and Food Festival had the misfortune of a very wet day, may I publicly congratulate the organisers of this event, despite the day being miserable and wet, a good number of people arrived and enjoyed the festive atmosphere created, umbrella’s, gummies and jackets were the most acceptable clothing of choice. It was fun to watch all who took on the challenge of making the very best of the day. Whilst we may be upset by the weather impacting on the overall enjoyment of the day we have still much to be thankful for by comparison to our North Island friends and family.
