A new look for Amberley's glass recycling

From next month, glass recycling from their front gate will be an option for Amberley township residents.

Starting 7 July, glass bottles and jars will be picked up weekly as part of the Council’s kerbside collection service.

The rollout for this service has been funded by a grant received from the Ministry for the Environment.

A glass collection box will be supplied for each house within the township. Box collection vouchers are being sent out this week to homeowners, boxes will be available for pick up from Hurunui Service Centre and Library in Amberley and the Hurunui District Council (HDC) office on Carters Road.

Renters are encouraged to contact their landlord to obtain their voucher.

HDC’s Compliance and Waste Manager, Andrew Brown said this service reflects the growth of the town, adding it’s a straightforward process, as long as simple guidelines are remembered.

Glass collection will be the same day and time as Council rubbish and recycling collection.

All collected glass will be backloaded to Christchurch, which means glass gets put in empty trucks returning from Kate Valley landfill.

The glass will then be recycled into new glass materials or used in roading, throughout Canterbury.

Residents are asked to remember to use the official glass recycling box, not overfill it, and remove caps and lids from jars and bottles.

Broken glass, drinking glasses, vape and perfume bottles are not accepted - boxes containing these will not be emptied.

“Taking glass to the Amberley Transfer Station is still an option if you have excess glass on collection day, or any glass that’s not suitable for kerbside collection,” said Brown.

Mayor Marie Black fully supports this extra service for Hurunui’s biggest town, she said it makes sense to centralise the collection of recycling for those in the town.

“And remember, wine bottle lids can be recycled via any transfer station or library in aid of Christchurch Kidney Society,” said Mayor Black.
