This week is National Volunteer Week, a chance here in Hurunui to celebrate those people in our communities who do their bit to help others… because they want to.
Volunteering provides a snapshot into what really happens in the lives Hurunui’s people.
This is priviledge for Kayren Hatherall, coordinator at Living Waters Food Bank in Waikari.
In the 1980’s Kayren and her husband Hartley lived in Hawarden and were involved in the shearing industry. After nearly four decades away from Hurunui, the couple moved back to Amberley in 2020, and have been involved with Living Waters Hurunui Outreach since 2021.
“My role at the foodbank is supporting the work of the volunteers at the church’s foodbanks across Hurunui and helping families who may need further assistance.”
Hatherall’s voluntary efforts leave her feeling grateful that she and her team can assist families and is humbled by the generosity of people in the community and the provision of fresh vegetables from the Waikari Community Garden.
Satisfy Food donates rescued food weekly, which helps with the ability to provide dignified support.
“The stories of people’s struggles become real and relevant. But if they can leave with a smile, somehow maybe their day will be a little bit brighter.”
