A Word from the Mayor
There is something about winter in North Canterbury that reminds us just how fortunate we are to live here. While the days are shorter and the mornings a little colder, our communities continue to come together in ways that make me incredibly proud to be your mayor.
One way you can make a real difference right now is by completing the community survey on simplifying local government. Thankyou to everyone who has already taken the time to have their say. It’s encouraging to see so many people engaging in the conversation, but I’d really like to see even more voices represented.
Simplifying Local Government is about more than changing council structures. It’s about making sure Hurunui has a strong voice in decisions that will shape our future. We all want local government that delivers quality services, spends wisely and remains connected to the communities it serves. Whatever your view, I encourage you to take a few minutes to complete the survey. The more people who participate, the stronger our message will be.
Winter is also a wonderful time to get out and support the businesses that make our district so special. The MADE North Canterbury Pie Trail is back, and what a great excuse to explore somewhere new or revisit an old favourite. Every pie purchased is more than just a tasty meal, its support for local cafes, bakeries and producers and the people who work so hard to keep our towns thriving. It’s another reminder that shopping local really does make a difference.
The next couple of weeks will once again will come alive with the MainPower Alpine Winter Festival in Hanmer Springs. This event will bring visitors to our district to support local and showcase everything our region has to offer. Equally they give our communities a chance to celebrate together, particularly during the quieter winter months.
So, whether you are enjoying a pie on the MADE trail, heading to Hanmer Springs for the festival or taking a few moments to complete the local government survey, you are helping to strengthen our district in different but equally important ways.
It’s these everyday actions that make Hurunui such an exceptional community, and I feel privileged to be a part of it.
