Hurunui residents back North Canterbury Unitary Authority option

Hurunui District Council's recent community sentiment survey on local government simplification has revealed strong support for the formation of a North Canterbury Unitary Authority, with 84% of respondents favouring the option over other governance alternatives.

The survey which closed Wednesday 22 July, was distributed to households across the district via letterbox, newsletter and online, with over 1,100 returns – representing more than 13% of ratepayers across the district.

Residents were first asked whether Council should take part in the “Head Start” amalgamation process, with 97% of responses agreeing with this direction. Respondents were then asked to rank a range of local government simplification options. Results showed the North Canterbury model as the preferred pathway, receiving significantly stronger support than larger-scale amalgamation proposals.

Hurunui District Council Mayor Marie Black said the survey provides valuable insight into what residents want from the future of local government in North Canterbury.

"Our community has sent a clear message that it values local representation, local decision-making and maintaining the unique identity of North Canterbury communities," Mayor Black said. "Residents have shown they are open to change where it delivers benefits, but they want governance arrangements that remain connected and accountable to local people."

Larger amalgamation options within the survey attracted considerably less support, which potentially reflected concerns from residents about losing local voice and influence in decision-making.

Mayor Black said the results will play an important role as Council considers future opportunities for local government reform.

"We appreciate the time residents took to share their views. The feedback demonstrates strong support for a North Canterbury-focused approach and provides Council with valuable evidence as we consider the best way to serve our communities into the future."

Council will discuss the survey findings at an Extraordinary Council Meeting on 6 August, where councillors will consider their preferred "Head Start" option for future local government simplification discussions.
