Smoke Testing in Hanmer Springs November/December
Some residents in Hanmer Springs may see non-toxic smoke rising from manholes, from the ground or, in some cases, inside of their homes in November/December. This is because the council will be carrying out its first round of ‘Smoke Testing’ on the sewer pipes.

Dan Harris, Chief Operations Officer, said smoke testing is common practice and can be helpful in identifying many potential faults in the sewer network. “In this case we are mainly concerned with decreasing the amount of storm water and groundwater getting into Hanmer’s system” he said.
“The larger the waste water volume the larger the costs to treat it. By removing this water infiltration, the overall maintenance costs will be less. Smoke appearing in your home may indicate that there is a problem with the plumbing in your home. Please contact a licensed plumber to make any necessary repairs.”
