A Word from the Mayor
Firstly, I would like to publicly thank the Amberley School Kapa Haka group for attending our first full meeting, their waiata and haka was an inspiration to receive. We have appointed representatives to all external committees and will have full membership to council meetings inclusive of an Audit and Risk committee. The purpose of an Audit and Risk committee will be to have a stronger oversight and review the robust nature of risk management, its systems, process and practice.
The Hanmer Springs Community Board has met, with the South ward, Hurunui, Amuri, Glenmark and Cheviot community committees planned for the next two weeks. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to participate in local decision making and I urge your support to these local governance committees.
I attended a Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ) Mayoral forum in Wellington with the opportunity to network with Mayors from around the country both new and experienced. My impression is that this group is highly focused on achieving the best results for their respective communities.
Hurunui District Council has submitted on the government Essential Freshwater proposal (https://www.mfe.govt.nz/sites/default/files/media/Fresh%20water/essential-freshwater.pdf) which you can view on the website, and currently your opinion is welcome in regard to local road conditions inclusive of speed limits.
I have loved getting out and about in the community attending the Cheviot school 125th celebration, the family focused Lantern festival hosted by Inspire Church, Hanmer Springs fete, Hurunui Garden Festival, Amberley show and the North Canterbury sports awards. It is no exaggeration to state that we have exceptional talent in our communities.
The Canterbury Apprentices and Industry Trainees Graduation Ceremony was hosted by the Christchurch City council which is part of a collaborative initiative for the Mayors taskforce for Jobs, it was an honor to attend and represent our district. We should acknowledge the far- sighted vision of employers who understand that the investment in people is a vital part of the success of all business. Today’s world is a lifetime of learning and re-learning.
By the time you read this the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pool and Spa will have celebrated the opening of the new pools and Conical Thrill, we should all be rejoicing in this amazing district attraction.
