Hurunui District has a good track record for waste reduction.
Did you know that in 2021/22, 1,961 tonne of waste was diverted from landfill, thanks to good recycling.
In 2022, 3,7922 tonne of waste was sent to Kate Valley landfill
At Hurunui District Council, our focus is to have an efficient recycling programme which will have minimal impacts on your rates.
The current picture
We have a very low contamination rate for recycling and have never diverted recycling to landfill.
We provide a weekly refuse and recycling collection to urban households and businesses.
We divert waste from landfill through kerbside recycling collections, litter bins in public areas and recycling facilities at our five transfer stations.
Each property pays $113/year in their rates for a Universal Annual Charge which covers a range of services including the operation and maintenance of transfer stations, waste management, education programmes, and the management of closed landfills. In addition, urban properties pay $100/year for refuse and recycling collection.
Recycling bags and refuse bags are purchased on a user-pays system.
We ensure local campgrounds provide recycling guidance and have viable options for visitors.
We encourage and support food waste and recycling facilities in public areas throughout the District.
Our objectives
Evaluate whether wheelie bins are a viable and affordable option.
Decrease what goes in your rubbish bin and increase what goes in your recycling bin/bag.
Expand the range of materials accepted for recycling at all transfer stations.
Review Amberley Transfer Station's operating hours.
Build a new transfer station in Cheviot to provide upgraded facilities and more space.
Continue to divert transfer station green waste for mulching by accepting suitable material at a reduced fee.
Evaluate options for a food waste drop off or collection service.
