Queen Mary Hospital Historic Reserve - proposed lease
The Council is proposing to lease, for one year, an area of approximately 1000m2 of the Queen Mary Hospital Historic Reserve to the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa for use as a picnic area.
A commercial lease is anticipated in the Reserve Management Plan so public notification is not required. However, the Council understands there is a strong public interest in this reserve and have resolved to publically notify the proposed lease to understand the public's view on the proposal before making a decision.
The Hanmer Springs Thermal Pool and Spa (HSTPS) are seeking to lease, for one year, approximately 1000m2 of the Queen Mary Hospital Historic Reserve.
In November the new cascade pools and slide will be completed and open to the public. Historically when a new activity is opened at the HSTPS they experience a large increase in customers. With the opening being immediately prior to the busiest four months of the year, the HSTPS are concerned the current picnic areas will potentially become overcrowded.
The area HSTPS are proposing to lease is outlined in red on the aerial photo below.
HSTPS propose to fence the area with a green wrought iron fence consistent with the existing fence on the west boundary. The fence would be located on the east side of the Linden trees and far enough away from the trees so they do not assist in 'jumping the fence'. Security cameras are also to be installed on the fence.
An arborist report has been prepared to assist in designing an appropriate fence and installation methodology along with a Tree Protection Plan. The Plan covers measures required to protect the trees in an un-damaged state whilst the fence installation works are carried out.
