Disc Golf proposal for Brooke Dawson Park
|The Hanmer Springs Community Board considered the feedback provided at their meeting on Monday 19 October 2020 and approved the proposal for a nine hole disc golf course in Brooke Dawson Park. The Board requested the layout be tweaked to better avoid the picnic areas. The course will be funded from the Hanmer Tourism Fund. Thank you to everybody who provided their feedback on the proposal.|
After investigating several options, the Hanmer Springs Community Board are proposing development of a nine hole disc golf course within Brooke Dawson Park.
The course will:
- use a local business to manufacture the tees and volunteer labour to install
- be an activity suitable for people of all ages and skill levels
- be designed to co-exist with existing and proposed uses of the park
- not be a commercial venture, it will be treated as a reserve amenity (like playgrounds)
- add a new activity to the Hanmer Springs activity portfolio.
What is disc golf?
Disc golf is played much like traditional golf, except instead of clubs and balls players use a flying disc, and instead of aiming for a hole in the ground, players aim for a basket.
How will it be funded?
Funding will come from either the Council's share of the proceeds from the sale of the Jollies Pass Road DOC house (this is required to be spent on recreational projects within the combined reserves of Brooke Dawson, Tarndale Park or Dog Stream, or Conical Hill) or from the Tourism Fund (which is royalties from the Bungy Jump operation on the Ferry Bridge).
It will cost approximately $7,500 ($830 per hole) to manufacture and install the nine goals (a local firm has been engaged, installation will be assisted by volunteers). There will also be additional costs associated with signage to indicate 'tee off' spots for each hole and the potential purchasing of discs for hire if required.
What do you think?
Let us know if you support (or not) the installation of a disc golf course in Brooke Dawson Park by 5pm Friday 16 October 2020.
