Lifetime Dog Tags
What does the QR code do?
By scanning the QR code you have easy access to the Council’s dog control information, including links for updating your dog owner details with Council.
There are also options to add additional information about your dog if you choose to. These services are provided by Tag King and are completely optional. You can find more information about these options by scanning your dog’s tag, or by looking online here: https://tagking.nz/products/pet-id-tags
Have the dog registration fees changed a result of metal tags?
Our dog registration fees haven’t changed. Metal dog tags cost more than plastic tags, but in the future we expect to make postage and administration savings as a result of the tag. So overall the initiative is cost neutral.
Do dogs still have to be registered each year?
Yes. Dog registration still needs to be paid each year but a new tag will not be issued. This is similar to paying your car’s registration – you don’t need a new number plate each year!
How can you see if a dog is registered if they always wear the same tag?
Scanning the QR code on a dog’s tag using a smart phone will display whether the dog’s registration is current. Our Animal Control Officers are also able to access registration records using the tag number.
What if my dog’s tag gets lost?
Replacement tags are available. A fee is charged for replacements.
Weren't the tags blue?
The original metal tags were an anodised blue colour with white printing. We have found the silver tags with black printing to be more durable. If your dog has a blue tag and the printing has worn off please get in touch and we'll arrange a replacement.
How can I register my dog?
You can register your dog by coming in to one of our service centres or you can do it online here.
