Social Housing
The Council provides social housing units in the district at Amberley, Waikari, Cheviot and Hanmer Springs.
Units are situated at:
5 Church Street Amberley - 9 units (4 double, 5 single)
5 Pound Street Amberley - 3 units (1 double, 2 single)
35 Princes Street, Waikari - 5 units (5 single)
53 Conical Hill Road, Hanmer Springs - 4 units (4 single)
4 Seddon Street, Cheviot - 4 units (4 single)
5 Rolleston Street, Cheviot - 4 units (4 single)
16 Buckley Street, Cheviot - 5 units (5 single)

Applying for a Unit
All applicants must have a housing need and their total assets, including cash, investments and house property can not exceed $25,000 for a single person and $30,000 for couples.
Council may exercise discretion in letting vacant units where there are no applicants who meet the criteria exactly.

Priority criteria
Preference will be given in the first instance to people over the age of 65 years or to adult residents who have been in receipt of an Supported Living Payment for more than 18 months, who meet the asset criteria, have lived and worked in the district or have family who live in the district and have a housing need.
Then to persons over the age of 60 years who otherwise meet the criteria in priority one.
Then to persons over the age of 60 years who otherwise meet the criteria in priority one but with assets in excess of the amount stipulated.
And where there are no applicants who meet the above criteria, to persons of any age where advertisements in local papers for tenants have failed to attract applicants meeting the three top priorities.
Flexibility of criteria will be permitted to ensure 100% occupancy.

Amberley
Waiau Accommodation
The Council provides accommodation units in the Waiau Village to support families, couples and individuals with a housing need who wish to live and work in the Waiau area.
Applying for a Unit

Letting Criteria and conditions
Units in the Waiau Village will be let to families, couples and individuals who have a proven housing need, and subject to the following criteria.
Priority
- Applicant requires temporary accommodation while their home is repaired or rebuilt.
- Applicant wishes to remain in Waiau due to family and/or work commitments or other justified reason and other private rental is either unsuitable or unavailable.
