Relaxed camping in Gore Bay for Jason the magpie
There’s no trimmings at Gore Bay and Buxton Camping Ground, which is just how people like it.
Tucked away at the north end of the beach settlement near Cheviot, camping life is back to basics where an array of tents, caravans and campervans creates temporary homes for both the regulars and those just passing through.
Cheviot local Catherine Maxwell took on the title of lessee in November, and said the holiday spot has been a constant hub of activity since then.
She’s had many weekends of full bookings, but said the laidback charm has been maintained.
“It’s a relaxed atmosphere, there’s plenty of space and everyone respects each other.”
The summer holiday facility proved a great option for families and young people alike during the festive season.
“Everyone is happy and gets along, because they are on holiday.”
Jason the magpie is a crowd favourite, the mismothered young bird circulating the camping ground and making friends wherever he goes.
“The weather has been magic, even though the farmers do need the rain, and there’s been massive pods of dolphins day after day.”
Maxwell said the support from locals and the reserves group has been massive, including the assistance from local woman Raewyn Hill who’s done a fantastic job managing bookings and being general ‘camp mum.’
“Extra help is only ever a phone call away.”
There’s no bells and whistles, there is no WIFI or shops, and kids have to talk to their parents.
“These reasons are why people love it here.”
