Milestones ticked off
The year has drawn to a close, and Christmas is almost upon us.
Here at the council we continue to tick off some significant milestones with the annual report being signed off. We remain optimistic despite the water legislation consuming many hours for our staff and with the other significant pieces of legislation the Future for Local Government and the RMA will require dedicated attention early in the 2023. We are committed to keep you as well informed as we are able on these key issues.
You may be aware that the government is providing a funding offer termed “Better Off” this is available to councils in two tranches the first being available now with the remainder due to councils on 1 July 2024. Despite not being convinced about the entire reform process your elected members considered the application should be secured for the district at large.
We know that people have chosen and will continue to choose the Hurunui District as their favoured place to live, work and play. In supporting these choices, we are very aware of the responsibility to supply features that meet your desired needs.
This evening some members of our district took the opportunity to celebrate the Hurunui District Council Student Achievers Award ceremony. This is one of the many highlights of the district and a great privilege to hear of the goals and aspirations of our young people.
I do enjoy the festive season, with an opportunity to take some time and recharge, and spend a little more time with family and friends. There are many fabulous events coming up over the next week or so with the Inspire church hosting a wonderful Christmas Dinner in the Tin shed Amberley, the Santa Parade will take place in Hanmer Springs, and maybe some road Christmas parties will be taking place with the neighbours.
Given we are entering the festive season, may I acknowledge the many volunteers, and community members who contribute to this beautiful district. I wish you well as we celebrate the summer season, be safe and enjoy.
