A Word from the Mayor
As we head into the general election cycle it is noticeable that some community members are expressing all manner of behaviours, it really bothers me that people disfigure the faces of people and rip down hoardings. Thankfully we live in a democracy, and your right should be exercised on 14 October rather than wasting endless time under the cover of darkness. An election cycle is a time of promise and uncertainty although, currently this is coupled with economic instability, high interest, low commodity prices with sky rocketing costs. Let’s take some time and show a little respect to all thoughts and expressions of hope.
Hurunui District Council are also experiencing unprecedented escalation of costs across our operation, at our recent Audit and Risk committee we reviewed our insurance cover for our $98.9 million portfolio, with $63 million of the assets having full cover including Natural Disaster with the Water and Sewer assets having full cover. As a council we have carried out a full revaluation of the land and buildings for financial purposes in preparation for the 2023 Annual report.
As we head into the Spring cycle the Hurunui District will again be showcasing many great activities, Scargill Spring Flower Show, Hurunui Garden Festival, Amberley show, and the Hanmer Springs Fete to only mention a few, this will encourage many visitors to our district with a genuine opportunity to boost our economy.
In the south ward of the district (Amberley) we are reaching to the community as we begin the first round of engagement for the South Ward Spatial Plan – there will be opportunities for community to engage through Drop in sessions and the council website will offer survey and maps www.hurunui.govt.nz/swsp A spatial Plan assesses current and future residential and business markets, subsequent land requirements and will provide a greater level of understanding of the implications of the projected growth from a long term planning perspective.
On a personal note, again this year I have just provided the grandchildren with their own bucket and a spud so they can have some fun to see the spud grow, over the past few years it has created such a lot of fun, enthusiasm (and competition).
