A word from the Mayor
The incoming new year always brings promise of something new, something to look forward to and for some the long-held tradition of a New Years resolution. This however may not have been met with any understanding nor enthusiasm from our younger generation.
However, visualizing a new year when suffering of the past would not be repeated and that we can live in a more harmonious world is still worth dreaming about, it would be nice to think that the world could find peace amongst people and that we can continue to protect our planet for the next generation and if we all become more alert to contributing to a circular economy and purchase in a more sustainable manner we are heading in the right direction. Although I note on my (not so daily bike ride) that people continue to throw rubbish out the car window and leave it for others to clean up, we still hear of people fly dumping their rubbish with no consideration that someone else needs to scoop this up and clear the site which comes at a cost to ratepayers, this is not acceptable, so if you can coach one person to change this undesirable behaviour it would be helpful.
I have enjoyed the holiday break with family and friends and feel grateful that we have not experienced any major natural event, but also having time to appreciate some wonderful summer days. However not far from my thinking is the intense time that my fellow elected members and I will be entering for the first half of 2024, our staff have been framing up for the Long Term Plan (LTP) a 10 year prediction of capital and operational expenditure. It will not be a surprise to you that our costs have risen across the board and we as council have not been immune to cost hikes which will have a significant bearing on our rate increase.
In the first quarter of 2024 we will be seeking feedback through a range of forums, it is really important to me that we work collaboratively to identify the aspirations and shared goals for our district. How can we find out and understand what is important to you and how can we put a plan in place and know that it will enhance the district now and into the future? I welcome your engagement in whatever method works for you. My contact details are 0212068185 or marie.black@hurunui.govt.nz
