Black ice is a hidden hazard that can catch even experienced drivers by surprise.
It forms when moisture on the road drops below freezing. This is often overnight or early in the morning. It lasts longer in shaded areas, such as where shelterbelts keep the sun off the road, or on rural roads that have less traffic to break it up. Bridges are another area where you need to be alert for black ice.
This thin ice layer is hard to spot as it blends in with paved surfaces. It's incredibly slippery and doesn't provide traction for your tyres.

- Keep your attention on the road ahead.
- Look out for dark, glossy patches on the road surface.
- Reduce your speed and drive to conditions.
- Keep a safe following distance from other drivers.
- Slow down before you reach icy areas, drive gently and avoid sudden braking or turning.
