Campaigning - Council Resources

Candidates are not permitted to use council resources for campaigning purposes. Council resources includes but are not limited to council’s logo and branding, website, council taken photos of buildings and amenities or landmarks, any forms of social media, computers, email, mobile phones, faxes, stationery, photocopiers, printers, stamps, cars, meeting rooms and venues (except those available for public hire).

For avoidance of doubt, the Hurunui District Council's Facebook page, Twitter, LinkedIn and website must not be used for electioneering purposes. Any post - positive or negative - made by any individual specifically relating to their own - or someone else's - nomination, intention to run for Council or election campaign, will be removed immediately.

Notice of the right to demand a poll on the electoral system

(Given under section 28 of the Local Electoral Act 2001)

If Hurunui District Council is required to hold an election in 2028, we're giving notice that we intend to keep using the First Past the Post (FPP) voting system for that election - unless our community asks us to look at this again.

You have the right to ask for a poll

As an elector of the Hurunui District, you can demand a poll to decide which voting system Council uses for the next two triennial elections (2028 and 2031). The choice is between:

• First Past the Post (FPP) - the system currently used, or
• Single Transferable Vote (STV)

Unless a poll changes this, Council will continue using FPP.

How to make a valid demand for a poll

To be valid, a demand for a poll must:

• be made in writing
• be signed by at least 5% of eligible Hurunui District electors (a minimum of 485 signatures)
• include each signee's full name and the address that qualifies them as a Hurunui District elector
• be delivered to the Hurunui District Council office, 66 Carters Road, Amberley, by 5pm on Friday 11 December 2026
