Registered dogs more quickly reunited with owners

“When dogs are registered, it’s much easier for Council to quickly reunite them with their owners,” says Hurunui Council’s Compliance and Waste Manager Andrew Brown.
“Registration gives us the information we need to get lost dogs home safely and efficiently.”
Hurunui dog owners can expect their registration renewal notices in their letterboxes shortly.
“Due to a computer system changeover, our renewal notices have gone out a bit later this year,” Brown says.
The deadline date has been extended to accommodate this.
Dog owners have until 19 September 2025 to renew their dog’s registration, or to register their dog for the first time, to avoid a 50% penalty.
“Registration fees also cover important services such as dog control and responding to lost and found dogs, and is required by legislation,” Brown says.
Even dogs with lifetime tags need to be re-registered. Owners need to register pups once they reach three months old.
